Calendas from Oaxaca have their origin in the 16th century and are common in patron saint festivities, baptisms and weddings. They can be defined as parades where residents are invited to celebrate and share a moment of unity.
This tradition is accompanied by distinctive music and involves several characteristic elements such as fireworks, marmots (enormous reed spheres), and Chinas Oaxaqueñas (women wearing traditional costumes).
